A time of shortening days and cooling temperatures. Of changing seasons and harvest. At this time we celebrate the </span><span style="font-family: verdana, sans-serif;">second harvest and give thanks for the things we have, whether it be an abundant harvest or many blessings. We may also honour the Dark Mother, that aspect of the Goddess, as she passes from Mother to Crone, and the God, her consort, as he prepares for death and rebirth.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: verdana, sans-serif;">Harvest and Autumn! That conjures up thoughts of soups, stews and homemade bread. Thanksgiving just around the corner (if you're Canadian) with it's turkey and stuffing, baked ham, and apple and pumpkin pies. And as we go into the cooler temperatures we want to enjoy those comfort foods that not only warm the body but also the spirit.</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I had a few ideas roaming around in my mind when I was putting this together. What to do, what to do. It is kind of hard coming up with a soul warming dish when the temperature outside is pushing 30C and feels like 41 (for my American friends that's 91F and 105F respectively). However, whatever the temperature we always need bread. So Voila! A lovely, flavourful Multigrain Bread!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">1 1/4 cup seven or nine-grain hot cereal mix</span><br />
<div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">2 1/2 cups boiling water</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">3 cups all-purpose flour</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">1/4 cup honey or maple syrup</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">4 tablespoons butter, melted and cooled</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">2 1/2 teaspoons instant or rapid-rise yeast</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">1 tablespoon salt</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">2 - 3 teaspoons sage, oregano, basil (optional)</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats</span></div>
<div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Place cereal mix in a large bowl and pour boiling water over it; let stand, stirring occasionally, until mixture cools to 100 degrees and resembles thick porridge, about 1 hour. Whisk flours together in separate bowl.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Once grain mixture has cooled, mix in the honey, butter, salt and yeast (and herbs if using) and stir until combined. Stir in flour mixture, 1/2 cup at a time, until a stiff, shaggy dough forms. Cover bowl tightly with plastic wrap and let dough rest for 20 minutes. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Turn out onto a floured surface and knead adding remaining flour 2 or 3 tablespoons at a time until a smooth dough forms (don't worry if you don't use all the flour), slightly tacky but not sticky. </span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Place dough in large, lightly greased bowl; cover tightly with plastic and let rise at room temperature until nearly doubled in size, 45-60 minutes.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Grease two 9×5 inch loaf pans. Transfer dough to lightly floured counter and divide in half. Press 1 piece of dough into 9×6 inch rectangle, with short side facing you. Roll dough toward you into firm cylinder, keeping roll taut by tucking it under itself as you go. Turn loaf seam side up and pinch it closed. Repeat with second piece of dough. Spray loaves lightly with water or vegetable il spray. Roll each loaf in oats to coat evenly and place seam side down in prepared pans, pressing gently into corners. Cover loaves loosely with greased plastic and let rise at room temperature until nearly doubled in size 30-40 minutes. Dough should barely spring back when poked with knuckle.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Thirty minutes before baking, adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 375 degrees. Bake until loaves register 200 degrees, 35-40 minutes.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Transfer pans to wire rack and let cool for 5 minutes. Remove loaves from pans, return to rack, and let cool to room temperature, about 2 hours, before slicing and serving.</span><br />

There! As promised, my first blog post
(Well, not really. If your here on my blog site you'll see this
thing started many years ago, and really never got off the ground,
but sorry, I digress.) Yes, I know, I said I'd have magickal recipes
and stuff. This is going to be part of the 'stuff', because before
you can do any magickal cooking or baking, you really do need to know
even a little of the 'stuff'.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Of course, this site won't be just
about magickal food and recipes. While I do lean heavily to the
Kitchen Witchery path, there are other aspects that catch my interest
– Herbalism (and really, a good cook needs to know about herbs),<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix5HD8rC17T7n3OocwKClPh5sB2Xr3N-G3V4Ds3p9vlnYBqPuw7Ma3xypydcuhieF3q4KRI9n_Z4m0IDXbUZw9TtKnr34dKvw9ZHVn3Ak1yVmi0SzhsDiOjTYGoPlqteqgITFy-GiPr6Y/s1600/Herbs.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="390" data-original-width="650" height="120" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix5HD8rC17T7n3OocwKClPh5sB2Xr3N-G3V4Ds3p9vlnYBqPuw7Ma3xypydcuhieF3q4KRI9n_Z4m0IDXbUZw9TtKnr34dKvw9ZHVn3Ak1yVmi0SzhsDiOjTYGoPlqteqgITFy-GiPr6Y/s200/Herbs.gif" width="200" /></a></div>
Crystals (hubby really loves is citrine bracelet, I haven't seen him
without since I made it for him),<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Candle Magic (taught hubby how to

much more. We may look a little at Voodoo, Hoodoo, Bruja, delve into
the pantheons, and from time to time, since we have these equinoxes
and sabats, we'll discuss Samhain, Lammas, Ostara.

<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Last week I posted a link on Facebook
to an article from the site <a href="http://www.mookychick.co.uk/">Mookychick</a> about getting started as in
kitchen witchery. Some useful tools and suggestions, and a short list
of basic ingredients to get you started. I'm about to add a couple
more items, ingredients, that I've found very useful.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Honey</span></b></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Honey, that wonderful elixir! Medicinally it can help treat cold and flu symptoms, ease a sore throat and apparently hangovers (I never knew!). Its antibacterial properties make it a great addition to ointments for sores and burns, and it makes a great facial scrub (Blog idea!). Magickally it can be used to symbolize sticking things together, binding spells or creating stability. Use it in a spell when you need to 'sweeten' someone or something. It's especially good in attraction, love or sex spells (oo la la!).</div>

<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="background-color: white;">Yes, I said onion. Actually, onions have some wonderful magickal properties.<span style="font-family: inherit;"> Magickal uses include prosperity, stability, endurance, protection, banishing negative influences, ending bad habits, and removing illness. Protection, Exorcism, Healing, Money, Prophetic Dreams and Lust are associated with the onion. Onion is considered a love food and is said to increase male virility.</span></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Butter may be a simple magickal ingredient but in my opinion a very important one. Aside from enhancing the flavour of a dish, it adds a soothing and smoothing to energies and relationships. It increases tenacity and has the ability to make change easier. If your in a bit of a rush, it makes for great grab and go spells. Just mix in the appropriate herbs or spices, spread on a roll and chow down. </div>

<b>Salt</b></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
The indispensable tool. An essential part of a witch's arsenal, whatever your path. With it protection and prosperity properties, salt can be added as an enhancement to dishes prepared for those purposes. Absorbing negative energy, protecting your sacred space, or just scrubbing your pots and pans (yes, it make s good 'cleaning scrub' magickally and mundanely), all from that tiny little grain.<br />

As you work in the kitchen, putting
your own magick touch in your dishes, you will discover those
ingredients that you like to work with and get the most 'effect'
from. <br />
<br />
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a dinner party to plan and back ribs to dry rub marinade. <br />
